‍ ‍What Is SMP?

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical, long-lasting solution for hair loss. It uses precise pigment placement to recreate the appearance of natural hair follicles on the scalp. Done well, it's invisible — you can't tell it's there. You just see hair.

If you have a buzz cut or shaved head, SMP gives you the look of a full, dense head of stubble. If you still have hair but it's thinning, SMP fills in the space between follicles so the scalp underneath stops showing through. Either way, the result is the same: it looks like hair grew back.

It's not a tattoo in the traditional sense. Real SMP uses different pigments, different needles, and a different technique than body tattooing. That's why so many cheap "hair tattoos" turn blue, blotchy, or fade unevenly. Done right, SMP holds its shape and color for 3 to 5 years before a refresh.

Realistic. Permanent. Undetectable.

‍ ‍Who It’s For

Real results. Real confidence.

* 1 year healed results

SMP works for a lot more people than most clinics admit. If any of these sound like you, it's worth a conversation:

  • Men with a buzz or shaved head who want a sharper, fuller look — the most common SMP client by far.

  • Men with a receding or thinning hairline who still have hair on top and want to rebuild density without growing it long.

  • Men with hair transplant scars (FUT strip scars, FUE dot scarring) who need the scar tissue camouflaged so it blends with the surrounding scalp.

  • Anyone with bad SMP from another clinic — blotchy, too dark, wrong hairline shape, unnatural fade. Correction work is a major part of what I do.

  • Women with thinning hair or alopecia — SMP can add density to specific areas without affecting longer hair on top.

Why SMP Works

Comparison chart showing scalp micro pigmentation versus hair transplant, topical treatments, and botched SMP by downtime, maintenance, longevity, results, and price.

SMP vs. hair transplant.

Transplants are surgery — real recovery, real scarring, and you need donor hair that's healthy. SMP is non-surgical, the healing is minimal, and it works whether or not you still have hair to donate.

SMP vs. topicals (minoxidil, finasteride).

Topicals can slow loss in some men, but they don't restore what's already gone, and you have to take them forever to keep what you get. SMP is a one-time investment with a result you can see immediately.

SMP vs. concealers and fibers.

Concealers wash out. SMP doesn't. If you've spent years buying powders, sprays, and fibers, you've already paid for SMP three times over.

Most importantly: a lot of clients come to Crone Ink to fix SMP that didn't go well somewhere else. If you've been burned before, that's not a deal-breaker — it's part of why I built this practice.

Many clients come to Scalpform to correct results from other clinics. With years of experience, Joe Crone specializes in restoring natural, undetectable density.
